Gangnam Style: Meaning

unless you have been living under your mum's vagina for the past several months
you've most likely heard of psy's single "gangnam style"
now whilst its pleasent to see everyone dancing around and enjoying his new song
due to the language barrier, few people realise the potentially profound meaning behind the song
so i'll break it down to you in plain engrish

gangnam is a suburb
kind of like the Toorak, South Yarra of South Korea
its super rich, super affluent and it holds a disproportional amount of Korea's GDP
consequently, its perceived with a mixture of envy and bitterness
doesn't sound very fair that a block of real estate the size of your third leg generates so much influence and power

anywhozle
the song "gangnam style" is a satirical dig at the wealthy in Korea
it makes fun of material wealth, conspicuous consumerism and the vain nature of Gangnam's residents
for instance, the music video mentions coffee and drinking it in one shot
now coffee in korea is super expensive, despite the GDP per capita in Korea being half of that of Australia's
coffee is about 1.5 times the price as it is in Australia
according to psy, downing expensive coffee in one go exemplifies gangnam's attitude, they don't care about savouring the taste, its about appearing "classy"

meanwhile, psy describes the sort of guy he is, the sort of girl he wants and climaxes with the chorus "oppan gangnam style"
it essentially means, im gangnamstyle, therefore, i embody all the characteristics of gangnamstyle
the flashy clothes, cars, the silly dances and the unnecessary props are all there to mock and emphasis the needless exhobirtant wealth of gangnam
this critique of gangnam serves to send a message, although psy says he's gangnam style,
the underlying contention he's trying to convey is that its okay to have your own style and to not conform to the masses or social trends that gangnam has a propensity of initiating
adopting gangnam style is silly and laughable

psy himself is somewhat of a personification of the song, he's always been a bit of a parody, bit of a quirk and somewhat of a "joke" in Korea before this single

overall, im not too crazy about the song
but im glad of the image it portarys of Korea
contrary to what you guys may think, not many people know about Korea
our presence is constantly dwarfed by that of China's and Japan's
as our economic growth slows
Im glad we still exert this cultural, "soft power"
